We turned Lesser Slave River’s aging municipal website into an engaging and ever-expanding communications hub.
Lesser Slave River is a thriving northern Alberta municipality about 260 kilometers north of Edmonton. This client has a vast and diverse region to steward (more than 10,000 square kilometers) and an abundance of great stories to tell. But its legacy website was not allowing these stories to be told to their full potential. It was built on a proprietary “black-box” platform that hindered scalability, that could only be edited by a sole vendor, and that failed to keep pace with digital norms. We began at square one: by aligning vast volumes of forms, statutory documents and site-wide content with an informational
hierarchy that would make finding information easy and intuitive, and that would facilitate growth. We developed the website on an open-source Joomla platform that can be maintained by any skilled practitioner – not just a few individuals. Legacy content was massaged, new content was written, and different modules were added to integrate social media channels and enhance the site’s functionality. We keep the website secure and maintained on a dedicated Canadian cloud-hosted instance, and we continue to work daily with the client to keep it current, adding content and features as required.
