Case study: newsmagazine design and publishing for Rocky View County.

Publication Design

We designed, co-wrote and published Rocky View County’s bimonthly newsmagazine.

Communicating across a million-acre municipality with under-serviced rural segments entails reliance on traditional media like print. But lackluster design and poorly-crafted content will be sure to relegate municipal print collateral to constituents’ recycle bins. This was a key pain point for Rocky View County. Our challenge was to help the client consistently produce and manage a top-quality newsmagazine that would actually be read by ratepayers, while remaining ever-mindful of the scrutiny that often accompanies public-sector creative. In short, it had to look good but not feel overly expensive.

We introduced a clean, cohesive design system that drew upon professional photography and illustration wherever feasible. We edited client-supplied copy to keep messaging on-voice, and we contributed public interest content that showcased the County’s many remarkable people, places and things. We also introduced a glossy paper stock and vegetable-based inks that were both compliant with Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) standards, and less expensive than the newsprint and inks previously used. What was the outcome?

We produced a higher-quality, lower-cost newsmagazine that heightened ratepayer engagement and fueled greater awareness of municipal initiatives. In its first year of publication, the client’s newly-minted newsmagazine was awarded Best Municipal Print Publication by the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties.
